Fractions!

This week we have been investigating Fractions in Action Stations. We know that Fractions of a whole have to be the same size. We learned cool words like 'numerator' and 'denominator'. We explored fractions of shapes and numbers (for example, what is half of 8?) in many different ways. Here we are showing some of our fraction thinking!

Electrical Circuits!

Did you know playdough can be electric? On our last day of term we had a great time exploring playdough electrical circuits and making LED lights glow. We used salt dough as a conductor and a sugar dough as an insulator. It took a bit of fiddling around to discover how to make the circuit work but shouts of delight could be heard all over the room as one by one we figured it out and helped each other. What a fun way to end the term! Happy holidays everyone!
Making interesting shapes for our circuits.

Sometimes it didn't work! Trying insulating dough to make a circuit wasn't very successful.

Rawe have been investigating simple electrical circuits. We can share our thinking about how electrical circuits work.

Rawe have been so busy getting ready for the production. We have been working hard practising our dances and songs. Here are some children making part of our costume. I wonder what it could be? Come along to our production to find out! Thank you to those who have sent along costumes ready to go. If you haven't yet please send them along on Monday. Black pants/leggings with a bright coloured t-shirt (red, orange or yellow for Mrs Polaschek's boys particularly).

Measurement

Here we our in Rawe measuring some lines using blocks.

First we had to estimate how many blocks would fit on the line and then we worked it out. Some of our estimates were very generous!

We learnt a lot about how to keep ourselves safe.

Cross Country

Today we raced in the cross country with the other schools from our zone. It was wet and muddy but we kept our positive attitudes and gave it our best go! Well done Rawe kids!

Sense writing

Some of Rawe have been using their senses at writing time. This week we tried apples and lemons!

I smell Apple. It is crunchy. It is sparkly too. It is dribbling down my chin.

Lemon tastes like sour cheese. It looks like yellow polka dots. It feels hard.

The lemon smells like lime. It tastes like lemonade. It looks lumpy.

Rawe's Post on Wednesday, 18 May 2016

When we are reading, we are practising not pointing to the words. Check out our video to see why. We sound so much smoother and more expressive when we don't point!

Around the world

Today we shared our houses that we have been creating at action station time. We listened to everyone's ideas and discovered that our houses all had some things in common- a roof, doors, windows, heating, furniture and even some animals. Then we looked at pictures of houses from around the world. We saw roofs, doors and windows, but it was amazing to see how different people in the world live. Some houses were made straw and mud, and some were very tall!

We are wondering about where our families came from when they came to New Zealand? Next week we will be asking our families to help us find out. Can you guess where Some of Mrs Polaschek's family came? Here's a clue.
If you guessed Scotland you're right!

Face painting

We are so lucky in Rawe Mrs Mathieson... We have Paige's mum, Mrs McKenzie in to paint our faces. We have been working so hard on our learning that Mrs Mathieson thought we needed a treat.

We are so excited about our caterpillar that has turned into a chrysalis. We wonder how long before it becomes a butterfly? This week we are working together in groups to make the life cycle of a monarch butterfly. Here are Sienna, Constance and Amber. " We worked together by taking turns" said Sienna. "We shared the jobs" said Amber

Easter fun

We have just been on a mega Easter egg hunt! It was so much fun. We worked together as a team to find all the clues. Here are some pictures of our children making their Easter baskets. They have to give their Easter basket to another member of Team Rawe. Great thoughtful friends we have here at MBS

Here we are giving our baskets away. We worked really hard to make our baskets extra special for another classmate. Perhaps it was even for someone we don't usually play with. What a great way to fill someone's bucket!
