Week 7

It is amazing how fast the term is flying by. It's hard to believe that we are in week seven of the term already! The children are really enjoying making and refining their cardboard games. They are giving each other feedback and making an improvement based on that feedback.
We have also been working hard on how to work together to be a successful group. The children were surprised at how many groups that they belong to.
In Maths this week we are looking at continuing and creating patterns. The children are using numbers and shapes to make the patterns.

Joining the chain gang

We have been practicing ways to spring while being in a group.

Week 6

Welcome to another busy week.  We are right into our design and construction Inquiry.  The students of Rawe are really excited to be working together to design and create their cardboard games.  We have based a lot of our design ideas on the work of ' Caine' - Caine's Arcade. There is a really interesting YouTube clip on this boy's cardboard arcade in America.  A great story that we were very inspired by.  Thank you to all of those lovely parents that have donated cardboard boxes. We have quite enough now to complete all of our creations.  With this crazy weather we are having at the moment some children are coming to school with a little less clothing than they need.  Can you please check that your child has a jersey/jacket, just in case the weather chops and changes. Have a great week :)

Here are some of our cardboard games under construction.

Finishing the missing half

We have been learning how to complete the shape by copying half of a picture.

John Parsons visit on Monday

Mr Parsons talked to us about internet safety and how to be behave online. We learned that compassion is contagious.

A visit from Nick Tansley

On Friday we had a visit from Nick Tansley of the Morgan Foundation. He was talking about creating a preditor free Rakiura. He was very entertaining. It was sad to here about all the endangered and extinct birds.

The planning stage.

Here we are working through the design process. After making our paper planes we refined them and tried to make them fly further.

Boxes Needed!

On Monday we will begin our planning and construction of our cardboard games.  If you have any old boxes at home we would love to have them.  Also, we are working our way through tissues very quickly, if you are able to contribute a box to the class we would be very appreciative.  Thank you for your help with this.

Week 5

Wow we are half way through the term already! After a couple of very busy weeks we are all happy and settled back to our work in Rawe.  We are very proud of our ongoing achievements with Math Whizz, with several of our students taking out last weeks progress certificates.  Keep up the great work guys!  It is also lovely to see all of our children out and about with their sun hats on.  We should now all be ready for when the sun decides to come out again.  If you haven't already done so, can you please check with your child whether they have their sun hat at school ready to go. Thank you.  We are now working in groups to plan, make, fly and refine paper planes as part of our Inquiry.  We have been having a lot of great conversations about 'why' our planes have/have not flown well and what changes we could make to them to get them flying further. By the end our the week your child should have posted on their own blog, a picture and blurb of their paper plane.  Check them out and ask your child about the refinements that they made.

Sharing our Writing

Today we have been sharing our stories with a buddy so that we can give feedback to each other and make our work even better.

Sorting and Classifying Shapes

Today in our math workshops we looked at similarities and differences between different 2D shapes.  We learnt about what an Edge is and what a Vertice is. Do you know how many vertices a circle has? We do!

Week 4

What a busy week we have this week! Pet Day on Monday and the Zone Soccer Tournament on Wednesday. You might find that the children need a bit of a rest by the weekend.
We are working on the technology part of our inquiry this week as we see an opportunity and design a solution for this. We are making paper planes and seeing which one can fly the furtherest. You might see some amazing designs coming home.
It is great to see that so many children have their drink bottles and brain food at school as this makes it easy for them to eat and drink when they feel the need to have something.
We have been working hard on our fractions of shapes at Maths time. We know that some shapes can't be halved and that thirds of a circle is hard to find!

We had a great day on Monday. The children really enjoyed all the fun activities at the Agri kids competition. You can see Finn P about to toss a gumboot into a sack. Way to go Finn!

Technology in Action

As part of our inquiry we are planning, creating, testing and refining paper planes.
